Are California’s infidel schools promoting pork?

There’s a strange claim in a New York Times story about California Muslims who home school their children that raises red flags for me as a reporter. Can you spot it? Here’s what the Times writes: “Hina Khan-Mukhtar decided to tutor her three sons at home and to send them to a small Muslim school cooperative established by some 15 Bay Area families for subjects like Arabic, science and carpentry. She made up her mind after visiting her oldest son’s prospective public school kindergarten, where each pupil had assembled a scrapbook titled ‘Why I Like Pigs.’ Khan-Mukhtar read with dismay what the children had written about the delicious taste of pork, barred by Islam. ‘I remembered at that age how important it was to fit in,’ she said.” (more…)

Al Mohler had surgery to remove a pre-cancerous tumor in his colon.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — R. Albert Mohler Jr., president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Monday received good news from the results of his recent surgery: a tumor removed last week from his colon is not cancerous.

Kentucky Episcopal parish bumped to ‘mission’ status

Another parish in the Episcopal diocese of Lexington, Grace Church in Florence, has dropped from parish to mission status. A parish is self-governing and its governing board (called a ‘vestry’) is elected by the church’s membership. A mission is governed by a bishop’s council or committee which is appointed by and answers to the bishop of Lexington.

I’ve analyzed the statistical data and I’ve reached the following conclusion: Hillary Rodham Clinton will absolutely obliterate Barack Obama in the May 20 Kentucky primary. In some counties, she’ll win by outlandish margins — perhaps by as much as 10 to 1.

Republicans more likely than Dems to label racism ‘sin’

A new survey finds that 87 percent of Americans believe in the concept of “sin.” But they disagree about which activities deserve the “sin” label. There’s a clear consensus that adultery is a sin. Americans also say that racism is a sin. But here’s what’s interesting.

Asbury seminary to pay severance to ousted president

The leading evangelical seminary, which ousted president Jeff Greenway in the fall of 2006, has decided to give a severance package to its former chief executive. In addition, the school’s finances have improved. Revenues are running ahead of projections and spending is below projections, according to a board of trustees summary report. The result — a $1.3 million positive shift. Finally, Interim President Ellsworth Kalas will now have the title of President Kalas until the search for a new president is complete. The change in title is meant to honor Kalas and acknowledge his leadership.

F-bombs, “fleeting expletives” and family television…

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Monday stepped into a legal fight over the use of curse words on the airwaves, the high court’s first major case on broadcast indecency in 30 years.
The case concerns a Federal Communications Commission policy that allows for fines against broadcasters for so-called “fleeting expletives,” one-time uses of the F-word or its close cousins.
