African to help lead Church of the Nazarene

A century-old holiness denomination has elected an African to serve as general superintendent.

“This is what being a missional church gives you.” Eugenio Duarte told the crowd after being elected on the seventh ballot.

Duarte will be one of six general superintendents who govern the denomination.

Apparently, his election was a joyous event. Jubilant Nazarenes reportedly swarmed Duarte, lifting him off the ground after the vote was announced.

Duarte is a native of the Cape Verde Islands. (I had to Google them.) It’s a chain of islands off of Africa’s west coast, hundreds of miles south of the Canary Islands. The islands were discovered by Portuguese explorers, and most residents are of Portuguese and African descent. Duarte reportedly speaks four languages.

I have fond memories of the Church of the Nazarene from my boyhood in Alaska. It’s good to see they’ve achieved a new level of diversity since then. Good luck to Mr. Duarte and to his flock.

Niall: if indeed you are a Nazarene then Please do that thing you ancient christian heresy-denying the body-fasting and show some respect for other people and their religious beliefs.
