After church split, tradition continues

At First United Methodist Church in Lexington, Fifth Sundays were a big deal. Instead of a sermon, the congregation would enjoy an hour of extraordinary music, led by one of Kentucky’s greatest organists — Albin Whitworth.

After a church split, Whitworth and much of the choir are now attending a new congregation, Faith Fellowship. The new church’s first Fifth Sunday celebration, drew a large crowd.

The choir sounds great, but is still hunting for new robes.

A friend of mine attends this new congregation, and apparently they’re having a good time. One wonders if the Methodist powers that be will allow the congregation to come in as a Methodist congregation. My friend says that they have a UU minister, though they meet in a Seventh Day Adventist church.

As a member of non-denominational Faith Fellowship, I can confirm that we are “having a good time.” Many, many people have remarked on what a joyful, loving fellowship it is. However, that is not to say that we are not also serious about our journey of faith. Since January we have formed a Congregational Care Committee, which keeps busy checking on and feeding those who are shut-in or grieving; an Intercessory Prayer group; a Missions Committee; a women’s circle; a women’s Bible study group; a Phone Outreach Committee, which calls each member monthly; a weekly e-mailed newsletter; Altar and Communion committees — all of which, of course, are in addition to the choir and orchestra which are now a part of our weekly services. As for our ever becoming a Methodist congregation. . . no thanks. When Bishop Lindsey Davis forbade Methodist ministers from ministering to us, Pastor John Bradshaw of the Seventh-day Adventist Church was kind enough to fill in several weeks; we were fortunate to have Dr. Maurice Irvin, retired CMA pastor, with us for many weeks; and now we are blessed to have Dr. Bill Turner, former pastor of Central Baptist Church in Lexington and South Main Baptist Church in Houston, who will be with us at least the next three months. God does provide!
