I think a better word to describe what happened to Duncan would be “deposed,” rather than “defrocked.” He has been removed from his Diocesan position by the Episcopal Church, but as far as I know, has not been defrocked as a priest, a process that usually requires some allegation of misconduct going beyond being on the wrong side of a theological debate. One must question, though, the integrity of the Archbishop of Canterbury if he even tacitly approves a situation where Duncan is allowed to remain in office in Pittsburgh under the authority of the “Southern Cone,” a province of the Anglican Communion centered in South America. I think that if he wants to be under their jurisdiction, he should move to South America.

No, he was defrocked (and then refrocked by another province.) The bishops found that he had abandoned the communion of the Episcopal Church and he was stripped of the right to do any ordained ministry in the Episcopal Church.

I didn’t realize they’d actually defrocked him. That’s a bit high-handed, in my opinion, though I understand why they couldn’t leave him in office.
