Evangelicals embrace McCain, everybody else backs Obama

White evangelical Christians voted overwhelmingly for John McCain, but it wasn’t enough to rescue the Republican from defeat.
(Click here for the numbers from the Pew Forum.) Obama claimed 26 percent of the white evangelical vote, five points more than John Kerry captured in 2004.

Obama improved on Kerry in all religious categories except one, “Other Faiths”. I think that’s rather humorous. Of course, it was only a 1% drop and the margin was extremely lopsided nonetheless, 73%/22%.

The Pew folks separate out Catholics and Jews but lump together Protestant Christians with all other religious groups that resemble Christianity. They specifically mention Mormon but the category probably includes Orthodox, UU, Jehovah Witness, Unification Church, and maybe even Messianic Jews. What’s with that?

I suspect it was those pesky Messianic Jews that put him over the top with their overwhelming vote.
