Haitians cut deal with the Devil, Pat Robertson says
flockwood1.) Who is to blame for the 7.0 earthquake in Haiti, according to protein shake salesman Pat Robertson?
a.) gays
b.) abortion activists
c.) liberal elites
d.) Fat Tuesday revelers
e.) Haiti’s devil-worshipping, French-hating founding fathers
1.) e: Haiti’s founding fathers.
For those of you keeping score at home: abortion activists, liberal elites and homosexuals may bear the blame for the September 11 terrorist attacks, according to Robertson. However, they played no direct role in the Haiti tragedy. [And the Fat Tuesday revelers are responsible, some TV evangelists say, for Hurricane Katrina. But they haven't been implicated in the latest tremors...]

How ridiculous.
January 14th, 2010 at 8:56 am
If Pat Robertson said it, it must be true.
January 14th, 2010 at 9:24 am
Something has gone seriously wrong in old Pat’s head! I can’t believe this guy is still on TV! His logic is so whacked it is stunning. Why do we give him any press? I guess everybody likes a freak show. If something destroys HIS house will he blame it on his own insanity? The man needs serious help!
January 14th, 2010 at 9:47 am
This guy makes the rest of us Christians look like narrow-minded ingnorant people. For those of you who don’t know, most Christians are caring people who feel sadness when tragedies like this occur and lift up prayers for these people instead of pointing their fingers at them. When thousands of people are killed and hurting do they really need people condemning them? Perhaps Pat should read his Bible and take heed that we have all come short of the glory of God. It must be nice to think enough of yourself spiritually to be able to point out other people’s faults and sins since you have none of your own. None of us are above a tragedy-not even Pat. If this guy thinks that he is so holy that he can condemn others from his throne, he is going to have a rough time on judgment day. For now, my thoughts and prayers are with the people of Haiti and I encourage others to do the same.

Crazy!!!
January 14th, 2010 at 10:16 am
He is certainly entitled to his freedom of speech; however, the way he uses it is sometimes quite goofy. He once said that we should boycott Halloween, not because of any sort of belief that it’s an evil holiday, but because the devil had possessed Halloween candy.
January 14th, 2010 at 10:35 am
To be fair, he said the devil-pact was a reason for the country’s overall historic suffering, not just the earthquake. I would be interesting in hearing what made him say they made a pact with the devil? It sounded like an historical event he was referring to. Or did he just make the idea up?
January 14th, 2010 at 10:50 am
You said it Paul J.!! I can’t imagine the heartache and suffering the poor Haitians are going through. Weather or not they “brought it upon themselves” is beside the point (I can’t see how they could have caused an earthquake!). I wonder of old Pat has ever fed a poor person or tried to relieve the suffering of someone he doesn’t even know. I don’t know about you guys, but I can’t imagine Jesus spouting blame on television instead of being in Haiti right now comforting and healing the innocent victims and even the “non-innocent” victims.

January 14th, 2010 at 12:55 pm
Jeez, what a loony.
January 14th, 2010 at 1:45 pm
Let’s clarify this. Loving and aiding someone who is suffering has nothing to do with “feel good” religion. To say a loving Christian is the enemy of this world is not Christian in itself. As a Christian we are to spread the gospel and the message of Jesus Christ to everyone to prevent people from dying and going to hell. If we don’t love people, how then can we care if they spend eternity in hell? And if we don’t care if they spend eternity in hell, how can we call ourselves Christians? Sin is sin and wrong is wrong. The whole point is that there is one judge, the righteous one, who will cast judgment, and he is not a man on this earth. The logic these people are using is no different than this: it would be like your house catching on fire with your wife or children trapped inside and when you call the fire department they inform you that they would come to the rescue of your family if only your family hadn’t sinned and were more righteous, and hung up to leave your family burning inside the house. Point is, if we were all judged by this logic of righteousness, we all deserve to be devastated by an earthquake. Let God do the judging.

Marc,
I think you need to be next in line right behind Pat Robertson to get your head checked. No, I’m serious. You’ve got real problems, dude! You aren’t drunk or something, are you?
January 14th, 2010 at 8:39 pm
The man makes me want to vomit.
January 14th, 2010 at 8:57 pm
KC, his views are not “goofy,” they are sick and perverted. I could go into a theological proof, but what’s the point? The man is a nutcase.
January 14th, 2010 at 9:54 pm
Marc, whether you realize it or not, you are imposing your own worldview on the Book of Revelation. Your understanding of that book is entirely different that the understanding of either the (unknown) author or the intended audience. Which was not you, by the way.
January 15th, 2010 at 5:01 pm
I’ll be durned. There is actually some slight basis for Robertson’s allegation.

If God attacked Haiti with an earthquake because of their “evil” then that would conclude that Christ’s sacrifice for sins was not good enough for Haitian people— according to Pat.
January 18th, 2010 at 10:40 am
José,
That was an interesting article, but I still don’t see how what a bunch of slaves did in the woods 8 or 10 generations ago should result in a natural phenomena, such as and earthquake, occurring 200-some-odd years later. Earthquakes of this magnitude happen all the time in California, did they do something to deserve them? (Um, don’t answer that—bad example.)
These were a bunch of slaves trying to organize and fight for their freedom. They’re way of galvanizing themselves and developing the fortitude for the struggle ahead might seem a little weird, and even a little sick to us, but their motivation—freedom—was certainly in the right place. I don’t blame them for rejecting the “white man’s god,” their experience of such a god was certainly not good. I don’t think the real God would ever hold them accountable for rejecting the corrupt representation of Himself presented to them from their taskmasters.
There is not much worse than an informed loony, which Pat Robertson is. He has taken historical events and twisted them to meet his own ends. We all do this to some extent, but Pat’s ends are so hate-filled and vile (at least in this case) that it sickens me. His ends are probably racial and self-justifying in not helping the poor Haitian people as much as we can. Whether or not they “deserve” help is not a question that should even occur to a follower of Christ. We are all undeserving and unprofitable to Him. And yet we are still so valuable that He was willing to suffer and die for us—all of us, including the Haitians.
January 18th, 2010 at 7:58 pm
Just to be clear, I was not affirming Robertson’s judgment in any way. I was just surprised to learn of this historical fact, this seed of truth which Robertson twisted into a bizarre interpretation of holy wrath.
Since we’re discussing weird and self-serving statements about Haiti I would like to call attention to the comments of Rush Limbaugh. what an opportunity for him to politicize this natural disaster, telling folks how President Obama will conspire to use this as an excuse for racial pandering. Even former President Bush found it necessary to object to such sickness.
Many Americans are doing what they can to help. This Sunday my own church took up a second offering entirely for the relief effort. A number of celebrities are helping. Sandra Bullock donated one million dollars to Doctors Without Borders. George Clooney is hosting a telethon. Lady GaGa is donating the proceeds from a concert this week. And Limbaugh? The guy who recently signed a contract for more than $400 million can’t be bothered to spare a dime to help poor black people who are dying and thinks that you should refuse too.
I don’t know if Limbaugh has ever seen the misery of Haiti first hand, but you might remember that he has visited Haiti’s neighbor on the island of Hispaniola, the Dominican Republic. In 2006 Limbaugh was detained upon his return to the US because he was illegally in possession of a drug which was not prescribed to him. It was Viagra, and Limbaugh admitted it was for his personal use. Limbaugh, who is single, was travelling with four other males. The Dominican Republic is said to be a popular destination for sex tours.
January 19th, 2010 at 1:47 pm
I certainly don’t endorse everything Rush Limbaugh says or does. I don’t listen to him myself. Whether or not he chooses to donate to the relief effort in Haiti is his business. There is suffering all over the world and people are welcome to their priorities on where they want to help. I don’t know what charities Limbaugh contributes to, if any, but that is his business. I would take serious issue with him if what you said is true about his statements of Obama’s racial pandering. With yahoos like Pat Robertson making such absurd statements, I don’t blame Obama for retaliating in some way.
Never heard of the Viagra episode. I guess I don’t get out enough. Do you have a reputable source on that? If it is true, it is certainly disgusting. The man is no better than Larry King or many of the Hollywood celebrities he criticizes in my book. Like them, he can’t seem to hold a marriage together. Infidelity is usually the culprit in these things, I’ve found.
Once again, I’m no huge fan of Limbaugh, though I agree with some of his positions. My jaw certainly didn’t hit the floor about any of this.
January 19th, 2010 at 2:21 pm
Rush Limbaugh may be the only practicing bigot left in America. Remember, this is the guy who used to play the theme from the TV show The Jeffersons, “Movin’ on Up,” when he talked about Carol Mosely Braun, former Senator from Illinois. He is, not to put too fine a point on it, a big fat white man who gets paid to lie and support big business and large corporations. He does an excellent job of this, which is why he gets the big bucks.
Why anyone would take anything he says seriously is beyond me. Even Republicans can’t stand most of his hateful rhetoric.
January 19th, 2010 at 5:09 pm
The Smoking Gun has photocopies of the documents:
http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/0706062rush1.html
Be sure to see the signed affidavit on page 4.
As for the DR being notorious for its sex tour industry, that was not known to me prior to Limbaugh’s escapade but it has been much reported since and I don’t remember seeing anyone denying that reputation. Nor do I remember Limbaugh disputing the rumored purpose of his trip there. The circumstantial evidence is quite clear.
As for:
“Whether or not he chooses to donate to the relief effort in Haiti is his business.”
It’s “his business” only with the understanding that his business is very lucrative. Mr. Limbaugh is fair game for criticism because he brought up the subject. If he wants to hold others accountable for their actions and statements I don’t see why anyone might think that he should be spared the same treatment. If you admit to being a fan of Limbaugh to any extent, you might want to examine more closely the whole creature.
January 19th, 2010 at 6:28 pm
Good point, José. Since he brought it up I guess we can attack him on it. I don’t think he speaks for the Republican Party or many conservatives. Much like Pat Robertson does not speak for most Christians, though, like Limbaugh, he CAN have good ideas at times. JFK was certainly not the faithful type, but he did have some good ideas also. I’m not going to discredit literally everything Pat Robertson says because of his bias against Haiti, but since life is short, I’m not going to waste too much of my time sifting through his rhetoric to get the good stuff. Truth is, I don’t listen to Rush, because I don’t trust him. He is bombastic and entertaining (if you agree with some of his points), but I don’t think he is particularly talented in objective analysis. So I don’t waste my time. I used to like Sean Hannity until I witnessed him blatantly quote Obama out of context. Trust was lost and I no longer waste my time with him, though I still agree with much of his platform. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen the same thing with many of the other mainstream news sources. Oh well, I do the best I can.
January 19th, 2010 at 8:38 pm
When the leaders of the GOP are afraid to disagree publicly with his offensive comments, to the point that they have to apologize for straying away from doctrine, then one concludes that Rush Limbaugh is effectively a boss of the party. It’s absurd that he holds such power. You can’t say the same thing about Pat Robertson with any major branch of Christianity.
I happen to find hypocrisy especially deplorable. Because Limbaugh has consistently criticized Democratic leaders for their very real moral failings he must be held accountable as well. (You might call that attacking but I call it being fair and balanced.) JFK or Bill Clinton surely sinned but I don’t remember them being so two-faced about it.
January 20th, 2010 at 9:13 am
Well JFK was never “caught” in his lifetime, so he couldn’t really be two-faced. As for Bill Clinton, I don’t care so much about his infidelity, bad as that was (I wouldn’t want to sleep with Hillary if I could avoid it either), but the fact that he lied under oath. Having a disbarred lawyer for President is unfortunate. It is sad that someone like Limbaugh, who is essentially an entertainer, can have so much power, but then there is also Lady GaGa. So….
