The fact is that most evangelicals have drunk the kool ade, and will never support a progressive for president, despite the fact that from 1896, when progressive evangelical William Jennings Bryan ran for president, through 1964, when most evangelicals supported LBJ, they always voted progressive. Beginning with the race wars of the '60s, and proceeding to the cultural wars of the '90s and today, they have voted based on the idea that the Republicans were somehow more "moral" than the Democrats. I don't imagine that will change this year. The only question about the evangelical vote is how excited they will be about McCain; they won't vote for Obama, but they might stay home.
