The Passion of the Filipinos

Masochists, with the help of hammer-wielding sadists, crucified in the Philippines, while voyeurs from Asia, Europe and Australia watch, according to this report.

If the Pope promised automatic excommunication for any Catholic participating in this ritual, do you think this practice could be ended or at least severely curtailed?

Excommunication is usually reserved for disloyalty, rather than evil. No priest has ever been excommunicated for child molestation (or even, as far as I know, for participating in the holocaust), yet many have been excommunicated for leaving the church and becoming priests or ministers in other denominations.

Excommunication in our church it can happen for both “apostasy” (or in other words, disloyalty) or also for the breaking of covenants made; baptism, temple covenants such as loyalty to spouse, etc.

I personally cannot believe that someone is so wacked as to believe that being “crucified” in some way brings you closer to Christ. I’m sure our Father is not pleased with this, whether or not the Catholic church decides to excommunicated the practitioners of such.

I agree completely, David. Don’t get me wrong; I’m not saying that the Catholics condone this, but they usually don’t excommunicate people for committing sins other than that of disloyalty to them.
