Here is the same passage from the NRSV: "for God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline." That's a nice story. I like the idea that public servants in high positions will be guided to act confidently but tempered by compassion and sensibility. Paulson cites 2 Tim 1:7 from the KJV:
